Dog-Friendly Attractions in Carcassonne

The 12th-century citadel at the heart of La Cité, restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. Leashed dogs are admitted in the outer courtyards and on the lower section of the rampart walk, but the indoor museum rooms and the upper covered wall walks are reserved for assistance dogs only. Entry is via the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (full ticket €12, free for under-18 EU residents); the outer courtyards alone are free and accessible during opening hours.

An 11th-century Romanesque basilica with a 13th-century Gothic transept and choir, set against the southern rampart of La Cité. The interior is closed to dogs (assistance only) but the cloister-like outdoor square in front, the south rampart walk past the rose window, and the stone benches in the porch are all dog-welcoming. The position offers one of the best views in La Cité, looking south over the Cabardès hills.

Four ruined 12th–13th century Cathar castles perched on a rocky spur above the Orbiel gorge, 20 km north of Carcassonne in the Montagne Noire. The 1.5 km uphill path to the castles is steep but entirely outdoor and welcomes dogs on a lead; site staff confirm dogs are allowed in the ruins themselves. The Belvédère opposite the castles is a flat 200 m walk for a panoramic photo. Entry €7 adult, free under 16.
