Hôtel de Ville belfry and Burghers of Calais
Place du Soldat Inconnu
The Flemish-Renaissance Hôtel de Ville (1911-1923) crowned by a 75 m belfry, inscribed UNESCO World Heritage in 2005 as part of the Belfries of Belgium and France series. The square in front holds Auguste Rodin's bronze Les Bourgeois de Calais (1895), one of the most famous public sculptures of the 19th century, depicting the six city notables who in 1347 offered themselves as hostages to Edward III of England to spare Calais during the Hundred Years' War. The belfry tower climb is free; lift admits assistance dogs only. The square is fully dog-friendly year-round.
💡 Walk a slow loop around the Rodin Burghers at golden hour; the bronze patina catches the western Channel light and your dog rests on the cool pavement while you read the inscriptions on each of the six figures.
