May to July and September are the sweet spots: 17-20 C highs, Ashton Court and the Downs are dry and green. August is busy with festivals (Harbour Festival, Balloon Fiesta) that make the city centre and College Green very crowded. November to March suits energetic dogs as the Downs trails empty out.
From the EU you need: ISO microchip, valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days old, not expired), and a GB Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an EU official vet within 10 days of arrival. The AHC is valid 4 months for onward EU travel and 4 months for return. Tapeworm treatment is required only for return travel to Ireland, Finland, Malta or Norway.
The classic Bristol dog circuit links Clifton Down (fully off-leash common land, 150 acres above the gorge) via the Clifton Suspension Bridge walkway to Leigh Woods (National Trust, 160 acres mixed woodland, off-leash on most paths). The Bristol Harbour circuit (3.5 km, paved, along both canal banks) is the flat city-centre alternative.
