Bournemouth has 11 km of sandy beach and some of the warmest sea temperatures in the UK, but dog access on the main beach is restricted May to September. The surrounding heathland and chines give year-round off-leash alternatives.
October to April is paradoxically the best season if beach access matters: dogs are permitted on all sections of beach outside the summer restriction (May 1 to September 30). Sea temperatures are 10-14 C but the beach is almost empty. May to September remains excellent for the Chines and Hengistbury Head, just not the main beach.
From the EU you need: ISO microchip, valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days old, not expired), and a GB Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an EU official vet within 10 days of arrival. The AHC is valid 4 months for onward EU travel and 4 months for return. Tapeworm treatment is required only for return travel to Ireland, Finland, Malta or Norway.
Hengistbury Head (2 km east of Boscombe) is the definitive Bournemouth dog walk: a double headland peninsula with 180-degree sea views, scrubland and beach access on the harbour side, dogs fully off-leash on the headland. The Bournemouth Chines (steep wooded ravines cutting through the cliffs to the sea) form a network of shaded paths that link the beach to the residential streets, all dog-friendly year-round.
