• 1.Know the beach ban dates. Dogs are banned from the Grande Plage May 15 – September 15 without exception. Beach wardens actively enforce this and fines are issued. Use Plage de la Milady (designated dog zone) or drive 5 minutes to Plage d'Erretegia in Bidart as your year-round alternative.
• 2.The Basque Country is dog-friendly by culture. Pintxos bars, cafés, and market stalls routinely welcome dogs. You don't need to research each venue individually, if there's an outdoor terrace, your dog is almost certainly welcome. Ask to be certain, but the default answer is yes.
• 3.For Txik Txak buses, small dogs in a closed carrier travel free. Larger dogs need a taxi or private hire. The town is compact enough that most central sights are walkable, so this only becomes relevant for excursions to Bayonne, Bidart, or St-Jean-de-Luz.
• 4.The Rocher de la Vierge cliff walk and the Phare de Biarritz lighthouse exterior are both open to dogs on leads. These are two of the most photographed spots in Biarritz. Go early morning to avoid crowds and get the best light on the lighthouse and the Atlantic.
• 5.Surf school parking areas and beach access zones at Milady and Côte des Basques are relaxed about dogs. If you want to watch surf sessions while your dog stretches, these are perfect. Bring water, the Atlantic wind is dehydrating for animals and owners alike.
