Public Transport with Pets in Basel

Basel's bright green trams and buses are the workhorse of getting around. Dogs over 30 cm shoulder height pay a reduced 2nd-class ticket; smaller dogs in carriers travel free. A monthly Hund-U-Abo dog pass is sold at green TNW machines and BVB customer centres for regular travellers.

Four wooden cable-driven ferries cross the Rhine without an engine, gliding silently between Grossbasel and Kleinbasel. Dogs ride for a small flat fare and the open boats are far less stressful for nervous animals than a tram. The Münsterfähre, beneath the cathedral, is the most scenic crossing.

Basel's tri-national airport sits in France but has both Swiss and French exits, which matters for pet paperwork: the Swiss exit (used for connecting to Basel city centre) requires the same EU pet passport rules as France. Bus 50 from the airport to Basel SBB takes 20 minutes; dogs travel on a reduced ticket.
