Rhine Swim Spots and Dog Beaches in Basel

A grassy peninsula where the Birs river joins the Rhine, with a calm shallow inlet that is one of two official dog bathing zones in the canton. Dogs swim off-leash, the current is gentle, and the sandy edge means even small breeds can paddle. Locals sunbathe alongside, and there is a kiosk for drinks in summer.

A short gravel beach on the Grossbasel side just downstream of the Tinguely Museum, marked as one of the canton's two designated dog bathing zones. Dogs swim off-leash, but the Rhine current here is genuinely brisk — only suitable for confident swimmers. Smaller dogs and puppies should stick to the gentler Birsköpfli inlet.

A series of pebble and grass beaches along the Wiese river through Landschaftspark Wiese, where the current is shallow and slow. Dogs can paddle off-leash through most of the park stretches, making this a far better choice than the Rhine for nervous animals or those new to swimming.
