Pet-Friendly Attractions in Basel

The red-sandstone cathedral perched above the Rhine is the city's iconic skyline, and the Pfalz terrace behind it offers one of Europe's great free river views. Dogs on leash are welcome on the terrace and around the cloister all day. Inside the Münster, only assistance dogs are permitted.

Basel's central square is anchored by the spectacular red Rathaus (Town Hall), a 16th-century structure painted with frescoes and topped with a fairytale clock tower. The square hosts a daily morning market with cheese, bread and flowers, dogs are welcome on the cobbles, though watch paws on hot summer days.

Jean Tinguely's whirring kinetic fountain in front of the Stadttheater is one of Basel's most-photographed landmarks: ten metal sculptures spit, splash and rotate in a shallow basin all day. Dogs love the cooling spray on hot afternoons and the surrounding plaza is leash-friendly. A perfect short stop between Altstadt walks.
