Essential Tips for Visiting Arcachon with a Dog

• 1.Know the beach ban. Dogs are banned from Arcachon's town beaches in summer (roughly June to September) by municipal arrete, and wardens enforce it with fines. From October to May, leashed dogs are welcome on the bay beaches of Pereire and Les Abatilles. Always check the current arrete and look for designated dog zones.
• 2.The Dune du Pilat welcomes leashed dogs year-round, but the open sand has no shade and gets very hot in summer. Walk it early or late, bring plenty of water, and check your dog's paws, hot sand can burn pads. The shaded pine forest at the base is a cooler alternative on hot days.
• 3.Cap Ferret is the classic dog day-trip. Take the UBA ferry from the Jetee Thiers (leashed dogs allowed on board year-round) for the ocean beaches, the lighthouse, and the oyster shacks. It is wilder and less regulated than the town beaches and well worth the crossing.
• 4.Mind the tides. The Bassin is a tidal bay and the water retreats a long way at low tide, exposing huge flats of sand and mud. Check the tide table before walking the bay beaches or the sandbanks, and keep your dog clear of the oyster beds, the sharp shells can cut paws.
• 5.The Bassin's seafood culture is genuinely dog-friendly. Oyster cabanes at L'Aiguillon and the Port d'Arcachon, the Halles market terraces, and the seafront brasseries all routinely welcome a calm leashed dog. If there's an outdoor terrace, your dog is almost certainly welcome, just ask to be sure.
