Arcachon's beaches split into two worlds: the calm bay beaches on the town's seafront, and the wild ocean beaches across the bay or south of the dune. As across most of the French coast, dogs face a summer ban on the main town beaches by municipal arrete, typically from June to September, when wardens enforce the rule. Outside that window, from October to May, leashed dogs are welcome on the bay beaches of Pereire and Les Abatilles, the calm, shallow, family beaches of the Ville d'Ete. For year-round dog-walking, the ocean side is the answer: the beaches at the foot of the Dune du Pilat and on the Cap Ferret peninsula across the bay are wilder, less regulated, and spectacular. Always check the local arrete and look for designated dog zones, signage changes year to year. The two faces of the Bassin, the calm protected bay and the open Atlantic, give dogs a genuine choice of moods.
