Amsterdam is consistently ranked as one of Europe's top dog-friendly cities. The culture is relaxed, locals love dogs, and the infrastructure is excellent. A few local rules and habits to know before you go.
Dogs must be on a leash of maximum 2 meters on all public streets and in parks outside off-leash zones. Dog waste must be picked up. Fines apply (โฌ140+). Dogs are not permitted on most beaches JuneโAugust except in designated dog zones.
Amsterdam is extremely dog-tolerant. You'll see dogs in shops, markets, and even some offices. The Jordaan, De Pijp, and Amsterdam Noord neighborhoods are particularly welcoming. Locals tend to greet other dogs as much as their owners.
Spring (AprilโMay) and autumn (SeptemberโOctober) are ideal. Mild weather, fewer tourists, parks are beautiful. Summer is warm but very crowded. Winter is cold but dogs are actually very welcome in most indoor spaces and cozy cafรฉs.
Take the free ferry across the IJ river from Amsterdam Centraal (behind the station) to NDSM Wharf. The ferry allows dogs free. NDSM is an enormous dog-friendly area with street art, restaurants (Pllek, NDSM Treehouse), and open space to run.
