Dog Parks & Walks in Amsterdam

Amsterdam's most famous park spans 47 hectares of lawns, ponds, rose gardens, and tree-lined paths right in the heart of the city. Dogs are welcome on-leash throughout most of the park, with designated off-leash zones clearly marked on the park maps. Primarily in the northeast corner near the rose garden. The park's long central meadow is a favourite spot for locals to let dogs socialise. On summer mornings it's magical; by weekend afternoons it's packed. Plan accordingly. Several café terraces inside the park (including Café Vondelpark and Groot Melkhuis) welcome dogs on their terraces.

At 1,000 hectares, the Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam Forest) is one of Europe's largest urban forests and the undisputed top destination for dogs in Amsterdam. Created in the 1930s as a work project, it features lakes ideal for dog swimming, cycling paths where dogs can run alongside, equestrian trails, meadows, and dense woodland. Dogs can go off-leash throughout most of the forest, with the only restrictions being designated picnic and barbecue areas. Several cafés and restaurants in the forest (including Boerderij Meerzicht) welcome dogs on their large terraces. Plan a full half-day. There's enough to keep an energetic dog going for hours.

A beloved neighbourhood park in Amsterdam East, Oosterpark is far less touristy than Vondelpark and authentically local. The park's large central pond is a magnet for water-loving dogs, who can wade in the designated access areas. There's a dedicated off-leash zone near the south entrance, well-maintained and regularly used by local dog owners. The surrounding area (Dappermarkt, Javastraat) is full of independent cafés and multicultural food spots that are generally dog-friendly on their terraces.

A favourite of young Amsterdam locals, Westerpark combines a lush green park with the repurposed buildings of the former Westergasfabriek gas works. Now a cultural hub hosting markets, events, and excellent restaurants. Dogs are welcome throughout the park and on the terraces of most venues, including Café-Restaurant Westergas, which has a generous dog-friendly terrace overlooking the gasworks pond. On weekend afternoons, the south meadow is alive with dogs, picnics, and impromptu football games. The weekly Westerpark market (Saturdays) is a highlight.

A genuine hidden gem on Amsterdam's east side, Flevopark sits right on the banks of the Nieuwe Diep river and is far less visited than the city's more famous parks. For dogs, this is the advantage: wide open meadows, river bank access for wading and swimming, and almost no crowds even on summer weekends. The park has an off-leash policy across most of its 12 hectares. There's also a small café and the Flevopark Openluchtbad (outdoor swimming pool) nearby in summer. A perfect choice when Vondelpark feels overwhelming.
