Cíes Islands: Strictly No Dogs
The Cíes Islands (part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park) BAN ALL DOGS year-round, no exceptions for size, breed or assistance status. Ferry companies (Mar de Ons, Naviera Cíes) will refuse boarding if a dog is at the terminal. If you want a 'Cíes-style' Atlantic island day with a dog, the alternative is the Costa da Vela mainland coast accessible from the Cabo Home headland (40 km south-west of Vigo), where similar white-sand coves accept leashed dogs outside the summer bathing ban.
Summer Beach Bans Apply
From June 1 to September 30 (09:00-20:00), dogs are banned from all official bathing beaches inside Vigo municipality: Samil, O Vao, Tombo do Gato, Argazada and others. Off-season (October to May) the same beaches welcome leashed dogs without restriction. The dog-friendly alternatives during summer are the dedicated 'praias caninas' in Nigrán (Praia da Mourisca, Praia de Patos outside the lifeguard zone). Municipal patrol fines run €100-€500 for violations.
Steep Topography & Outdoor Escalators
Vigo is built on steep granite slopes (sea level to 180 m within 1 km), making walking with a dog much more demanding than the elevation profile suggests. The city has installed FREE OUTDOOR ESCALATORS on the steepest sections (Rúa Río Tomás Alonso, Calvario, Couto). Carry small dogs; for larger dogs, keep them firmly heeled on the moving stair. Senior dogs or short-legged breeds will tire fast on the cobble climbs, plan flat harbour-front walks via Avenida da Beiramar instead.
