Hévíz

The world's largest naturally warm biologically active thermal lake, fed by a karst spring and covered in water lilies, sits at the heart of the town inside the Lake Bath spa complex. Only registered guide dogs may enter the grounds, so most visiting dogs wait this one out at the hotel or a nearby terrace.

The protected forest belt that rings the thermal lake gives shaded, flat gravel paths for a proper leashed walk right in the town center. It stays cool even on hot summer afternoons thanks to mature tree cover.

A 13th-century Árpád-era village church with an octagonal tower stands in the historic Egregy district, next to a small Roman ruin garden with a villa rustica and herb garden. The outdoor grounds are easy to see on a leashed walk, ringed by a centuries-old cemetery.

Hungary's grandest surviving aristocratic palace, in Keszthely about 20 minutes away, sits inside a landscaped park with roughly 70,000 flowers planted yearly. Leashed dogs are welcome in the park grounds, though only service dogs may enter the exhibition rooms.

Lake Balaton's dedicated Keszthely dog beach, about 8 km from Hévíz, gives dogs a fenced, off-leash lakefront with shade, a dog playground and a small entry fee. It's the closest genuine swimming spot for a dog visiting Hévíz, since the thermal lake itself is off-limits.

The paved, tree-lined promenade circling the thermal lake links the spa buildings to the town center and makes Hévíz's default evening walk. Cafés and shops line the route, but the path itself stays calm and level underfoot the whole way round.
