Essaouira is a port city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, ringed by white-and-blue ramparts battered by the wind. Built as it now appears in the 18th century on the site of the old Portuguese trading post of Mogador, its fortified medina is today a UNESCO World Heritage site for its regular plan and its bastions facing the ocean. The Skala de la Ville, a long artillery platform bristling with cannon, looks out over the waves, while the fishing harbour lines up its blue boats and its nets. Nicknamed the City of Wind for the trade winds that sweep it almost without pause, Essaouira is cooler than inland and popular with surfers and kitesurfers along its vast beach. It is also the capital of Gnaoua music, celebrated each summer by a great festival, and a gateway to the argan-oil cooperatives and the neighbouring village of Diabat.
The UNESCO-listed fortified medina, with its white lanes, its monumental gates and its ramparts facing the Atlantic. It is walked on leash, keeping the dog close in the busy souks and respecting the crowd and the stalls.
The long artillery platform bristling with bronze cannon that runs along the northern ramparts, with a superb view over the ocean and the Purpuraires islands. You walk it on leash, but mind the wind and spray that sweep the bastion.
The lively harbour where the famous blue boats line up, amid the fish auction, net-mending and the coming and going of gulls. The quays are walked on leash in the open air, but the place is noisy and crowded, so keep the dog well held near the fish stalls.
The vast windswept beach stretching south, a paradise for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Dogs are generally tolerated away from the busiest central section, keep them leashed and check locally, as the rules vary with the season.
The village of Diabat, south of the Ksob river, and the sand-buried ruins of Borj El Baroud, an old coastal fort that legend links to Jimi Hendrix. You reach it on foot or on horseback along the beach and dunes, on leash, away from the medina crowds.
The argan-oil cooperatives in the surroundings, where women crack and hand-press the nuts of this tree endemic to south-western Morocco. Dogs are not allowed in the production workshops for food-hygiene reasons, so leave them in the shade during the visit.
