A dog must be on a lead no longer than six feet (1.8 m) in every public place in Denver, and off-leash is legal only inside a fenced city dog park. Waste must be picked up, and municipal penalties for leash offences run high, up to 999 dollars in the code. Dogs living in Denver need a city licence, and a dog identified as a pit bull type still needs a breed-restricted permit from Denver Animal Protection, a rule that survived the 2020 repeal of the outright ban and limits a household to two such dogs.
Denver stands at 1,609 m, high enough that a dog arriving from sea level tires faster and dehydrates sooner, though true altitude sickness usually starts above 2,400 m, which is where the mountain trailheads west of town begin. Give a newly arrived dog a day or two of easy walking before any hike, carry more water than you think you need, and use the back of your hand on the pavement before a July walk: mid-afternoon asphalt reaches temperatures that blister pads within a minute. Light-coated and short-nosed dogs also sunburn quickly under this sun.
Once you leave the city grid, three things bite. Prairie rattlesnakes are active on the foothill trails from roughly April to October and are the reason so many Colorado dogs are given rattlesnake avoidance training. Cheatgrass and foxtail seed heads dry out in June and drive into paws, ears and noses, so check between the toes after every walk on dry ground. Prickly pear cactus grows right beside open-space paths on the plains. Coyotes are common city-wide at dawn and dusk, which is another argument for keeping the lead short in the parks.
Denver winters are sunny and cold rather than grey, with big snowfalls that melt within days, but the city salts and de-ices heavily, and that mix cracks pads and is toxic if licked off. Rinse the paws after a winter walk, or use boots. Late April to mid June and September to mid October give the best combination: warm days, cool nights, open patios and no pavement burn. July and August are hot and bring afternoon thunderstorms, and March is famously the snowiest month.
