Copenhagen, consistently ranked among the world's most liveable cities, is also one of Europe's most dog-friendly capitals. Danes have a deep and unsentimental relationship with their dogs: Copenhageners cycle with dogs in cargo bikes, take them to work, and bring them to the city's many dog-friendly cafés and restaurants as a matter of course. The city's commitment to cycling infrastructure, its network of harbour baths, parks and beaches within cycling distance, and its high social trust create an environment where dogs are genuinely welcomed rather than merely tolerated. An estimated 70,000 dogs live in the Copenhagen metropolitan area.
The romantic English landscape gardens of Frederiksberg palace, 32 hectares of canals, hills and woodland, are among Copenhagen's best dog walks. Connecting directly to the 55-hectare Søndermarken park with a large off-leash zone, it's the go-to morning destination for dog owners in western Copenhagen.
The former shipyard island of Refshaleøen, now a creative and food hub, borders the vast Amager Fælled nature reserve. The fælled (common) is 3.5km² of meadow, wetland and forest, one of the best off-leash wild-feeling dog walks in any European capital.
Nørrebro is Copenhagen's most dog-friendly neighbourhood: independent cafés with dogs under the tables, a Saturday organic market and the Assistens Cemetery, burial place of Kierkegaard and H.C. Andersen, which doubles as a beloved public park where locals picnic and walk dogs.
The colourful 17th-century canal of Nyhavn and the harbour front are navigable with a dog. The harbour baths (swimming spots) are not accessible to dogs, but the quayside promenade and the canal boat tours (Nettobådene) allow dogs in carriers.
Tivoli does not allow dogs. It is one of Copenhagen's top attractions but requires leaving your pet at the hotel. Check accommodation with secure dog-minding facilities if you plan a Tivoli evening.
