Brisbane's summer, from December to February, runs to daily maximums around 30 degrees with humidity that makes it feel hotter, and the storm season brings violent afternoon thunderstorms that can arrive within half an hour. The practical answer is to move the dog's day to the ends: a long walk before 8:00, the ferry and a shaded lunch in the middle, and the off-leash park again after 17:00. Test the pavement and the metal ferry gangways with the back of your hand before crossing them, since both hold heat well past sunset. Winter, from June to August, is the season locals recommend for a dog: dry, sunny days around 21 degrees, cool nights and almost no rain, which makes it the best window for the long foreshore walks and the bushland trails.
Two local hazards deserve genuine attention. The paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, lives along the subtropical coast and in south-east Queensland is seen more or less all year rather than in a tidy season; its toxin causes progressive paralysis that is fatal without treatment. Put a visiting dog on a vet-recommended preventative before you travel and run your fingers over the whole dog every evening after bushland walks, paying attention to the head, neck, ears, lips, between the toes and under the tail. Wobbly back legs, a changed bark or retching is a same-hour emergency. The cane toad is the second hazard: it is established throughout Brisbane, comes out on warm wet nights, and a dog that mouths or swallows one needs a vet immediately. Beyond those, keep dogs out of long grass and out of the mangroves, watch for snakes on bushland trails in the warmer months, and remember that the Brisbane River is not a swimming spot for a dog, since councils warn owners to keep pets out of water where bull sharks are resident.
Under the council's animals local law a dog in any public place must be securely on a lead unless it is inside a marked off-leash area, and the yellow sign is what makes an area off-leash. Fines apply, and the council expects dogs to be microchipped and registered, which a visiting dog cannot be, so keep the lead on and stay conservative. Several headline sights are closed to dogs: the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha excludes all animals except guide and assistance dogs to protect its native wildlife, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and the indoor cultural venues are out, and at South Bank Parklands dogs are barred from the swimming lagoon, the streams and the eating areas even though the rest of the parkland welcomes them on a lead. Roma Street Parkland takes leashed dogs everywhere except the Spectacle Garden in Colin Campbell Place, and the City Botanic Gardens on Alice Street welcomes them on a lead throughout.
