Tampere: storia e carattere

Tampere, founded in 1779 on the Tammerkoski rapids linking Lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, became the 'Manchester of Finland' in the 19th century thanks to the Finlayson cotton mill (1820), one of the largest in northern Europe. The city was the site of decisive moments in Finnish history, the 1918 civil war, the official declaration of independence from Russia in 1917 inside the Finlayson council room, the first public meeting between Lenin and Stalin. Now the country's third city (240,000 people) and unofficial sauna capital, Tampere is one of Europe's most dog-friendly cities: Nysse trams and VR trains free for leashed dogs (no muzzle, no ticket), 22 fenced municipal koira-aitaus, two lake-front dog beaches 15 min on foot from the centre, and the Pyynikki ridge, the world's highest gravel esker, with its iconic observation tower café.
