Fundão, seat of the Castelo Branco district in the heart of Portugal's Beira interior, spreads at the foot of the Serra da Gardunha, only a few kilometres from the Serra da Estrela. This small granite town owes its fame to its cherry trees: every June the Festa da Cereja celebrates a harvest that turns the mountain's terraced orchards deep red. Around the Praça do Município and the Convento de Santo António, the streets keep a calm rural rhythm where the culture of country quintas and open-air esplanadas is very welcoming to dogs. Inland Portugal brings hot dry summers but cooler mountain air, ideal for hiking the Gardunha trails or wandering the nearby Historical Villages such as Castelo Novo, whose granite lanes suit a gentle leashed walk. This is not a seaside destination: here it is the hills, the villages and the rivers that shape a stay.
The town's main square, lined by the town hall and lively with esplanadas and the market. Leashed dogs are welcome, an ideal starting point for exploring the centre on foot.
A former 17th-century Franciscan convent, now a cultural venue, with an open forecourt and gardens. Leashed dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas, though not inside.
The granite mountain rising above town, criss-crossed by hiking trails and cherry orchards. Leashed dogs are welcome; bring water, as shade is patchy in summer.
A granite Historical Village on the Gardunha's slopes, with its pillory, royal fountain and cobbled lanes. Leashed dogs are welcome through the streets, about twenty minutes from Fundão.
An old spa town and stage on the royal road, rich in baroque fountains and granite manor houses. Its quiet lanes are easy to wander on a leash.
Terraced cherry orchards blanketing the Gardunha's slopes, turning red in June for the Festa da Cereja. Rural paths perfect for a leashed spring walk.
