Beat the summer heat
Lisbon-area summers are hot and the open sand bakes. Walk and beach your dog before about 10:00 and after about 18:00, avoid the midday hours, and test the sand with your hand: if it is too hot for your palm, it will burn paws. Carry water at all times, as fountains are scarce on the southern sands.
Know the beach rules
From June to mid-September, dogs are banned from supervised, concessioned beaches by Portuguese law. Stick to the unconcessioned northern tip near Cova do Vapor and the southern sands toward Fonte da Telha, keep your dog leashed, and always bag waste. Out of season, October to May, almost the whole coast is open to leashed dogs.
Getting around with a dog
Reach Caparica from Lisbon by TST bus, or cross the Tagus by ferry to Cacilhas with a leashed, muzzled dog. Small dogs in a carrier travel free on most services. For a beach holiday with a large dog, a car is far more practical, since the coast and the Mata dos Medos are spread over several kilometres.
Use Lisbon as a day-trip
Caparica makes a relaxed dog-friendly base just across the river from Lisbon, whose miradouros, riverside walks and many esplanades are easy with a leashed dog. Combine a cool morning in the Mata dos Medos pine forest with an afternoon in the city, then return for a sunset walk on the seafront promenade. Always keep water and shade in mind when crossing in summer.
