Dog Rules & Law
Dogs are banned on every beach in Lège-Cap-Ferret all year, on both coasts, leashed or not. Elsewhere dogs must be kept on a leash, including in the forest, on cycle paths and through the oyster villages, and strictly so in the protected Piraillan reservoir bird zone. Pick up after your dog and stay on marked trails near the dunes.
Heat & Paw Safety
Summers on the peninsula are hot and the cycle paths and dune sand can burn paws at midday. Walk your dog early morning or evening, carry water, seek the shaded pinewood trails in the heat, and never leave a dog in a parked car at the beach car parks. Watch for processionary caterpillars in the pines in spring, which are dangerous to dogs.
Best Seasons
Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September) are ideal: warm, far quieter, and the cabane terraces and forest trails are at their best for a dog. July and August are beautiful but very crowded, with saturated parking and hot middays. Since the beaches are off-limits anyway, the shoulder seasons suit a dog holiday best.
Must-Do Day Out
Take the UBA ferry across the Bassin with your leashed dog (2 EUR), then walk the colourful oyster village of L'Herbe with its car-free alleys and the Moorish Chapelle Algérienne, finishing with oysters on a cabane terrace. It is the most quintessentially Cap Ferret day out you can do with a dog, beaches aside.
