Georgia's second city and capital of Adjara, Batumi stretches along the Black Sea, right by the Turkish border. Once a trading post and then a fashionable spa town of the Russian imperial era, the city has reinvented itself as a surprising blend of restored Belle Epoque architecture and bold skyscrapers, including the famous Alphabet Tower celebrating the 33 letters of the Georgian script. Its beating heart is Batumi Boulevard, a 7 km planted promenade running along the pebble beach, dotted with fountains, cafes and a cable car climbing to the hills. Further south, the botanical garden unfolds its flowering terraces above the waves. For a traveller with a dog, Batumi is welcoming: easy entry into Georgia, a long seafront walk ideal on a leash, and calm municipal stray dogs recognisable by an ear tag attesting vaccination and neutering.
Batumi Boulevard, a 7 km planted promenade running along the Black Sea, dotted with fountains, sculptures and cycle paths. Leashed dogs are perfectly at home along its full length, ideal in the early morning or the cool of the evening.
A vast terraced botanical garden on Green Cape, 9 km north, one of the richest of the former USSR with its collections arranged by world regions. Leashed dogs are allowed on the paths; bring water and good shoes for the slopes.
An Italian-style square in old Batumi, with mosaics, a campanile and neo-Venetian facades ringing a paved space lined with cafes. A pleasant crossing on a leash, and most terraces tolerate dogs outside.
The Alphabet Tower, a 130 m helix skyscraper whose structure celebrates the 33 letters of the Georgian script, with an observation deck at the top. The forecourt can be walked on a leash, but the lift and indoor platform do not admit dogs.
A long pebble beach edging the boulevard for kilometres, unmanaged along most of its length. Leashed dogs are tolerated on the unsupervised sections away from the managed summer bathing zones, preferably early in the morning.
The Argo cable car climbing from town to Anuria hill, offering a panorama over the bay and the mountains of Adjara. Dogs are not allowed in the cabins; leave yours below and enjoy the hill trail on a leash instead.
