Castle Island in South Boston is a peninsula crowned by Fort Independence (1851) with a 4 km flat seawall loop around Pleasure Bay, one of Boston's most beloved walks. Year-round, leashed dogs are welcome on the seawall, the fort exterior and the grass lawns; from October 1 to March 31 they are also welcome on the beach itself. The protected Pleasure Bay water is calm and the seawall faces Logan Airport runways - one of the city's signature dog-and-plane-spotting walks. Sullivan's at the entrance does fried clams and is a leashed-dog patio (off-season tables).

Revere Beach in Revere is the oldest public beach in the United States (designated 1896), a 5 km crescent of Atlantic sand with the famous striped art deco bath house. From October 1 to March 31, leashed dogs are welcome on the entire sand strip and the boulevard promenade. The protected south end at the Lynn Marsh is the calmest dog swim. Direct MBTA Blue Line access (Revere Beach stop is at the boulevard) makes this the easiest leashed-dog winter beach walk from a Boston hotel.

Crane Beach in Ipswich, 50 minutes north of Boston, is a 6 km Atlantic sand strip with dunes managed by The Trustees of Reservations, and is Greater Boston's only year-round dog-friendly beach. From October 1 to March 31, leashed dogs are welcome at all hours; April 1 to September 30 the beach is no-dogs during the day but allows leashed dogs before 09:00 only. The water is colder than Boston Harbor (Atlantic open coast) but the protected end at the Castle Hill bluff is calmer. Day-use fee applies ($30-35 per vehicle, less off-season).
