Best Parks & Nature Reserves on Texel, Duinen van Texel National Park Off-Leash

A 4,300-hectare national park covering the western dune belt from De Slufter to the Mokbaai, with marked walking and cycling routes through wild dune grass, freshwater valleys, mature pine plantations and coastal heath. Dogs are leashed on most routes April 1–September 1 (bird nesting) and free off-marked-path from September 16 to April 14. The De Dennen pine forest in the centre keeps a year-round off-leash trail loop that works in any weather.

A 600-hectare NATURA 2000 salt marsh on the northwest coast where the North Sea breaks through the dunes at high tide, creating a tidal landscape of creeks, samphire flats and curlew-nesting reed. A boardwalk runs from the Slufterweg car park to the dune-top viewpoint, dogs welcome on leash year-round. The marsh floor itself is closed April 1–August 31 for bird breeding; the dune ridge and viewpoint stay open.

An 850-hectare planted pine and oak forest in the centre of Texel, the largest woodland on any of the Dutch Wadden islands and the island's only year-round off-leash dog area on marked trails. Sandy paths, mountain-bike loops shared with leashed dogs, and freshwater pools at the Westerslag and Mokweg entrances make it the foul-weather option when the dunes are exposed.
