Sirmione is one of the more genuinely dog-friendly spots on Lake Garda, with several beaches that allow dogs to swim and a town that is used to four-legged visitors. The two things to plan around are summer heat on the white stone and the car-free ZTL old town. A few local rules and habits to know before you go.
Under Italian rules dogs must be on a leash of maximum 1.5 m in all urban public areas, public transport and on the ferries, and owners must carry a muzzle to apply if required. Dog waste must be picked up. On Sirmione's beaches dogs are allowed and may swim where permitted, but at the Lugana beach they may not enter the water.
Summers are hot and the peninsula's white limestone and stone lanes radiate heat. From June to September walk early morning or evening, test the ground with your hand, and carry water. Jamaica Beach has almost no shade, so prefer the partly shaded Lido delle Bionde or grassy Brema beach in the heat of the day.
The old town is a car-free ZTL, with a stricter summer version from late March to mid-October 2026 that pedestrianises the centre in the afternoon. Park at Colombare or Grifo Parking and walk in or use the โฌ1 shuttle; a free electric shuttle runs in the early evening between old-town hotels and Grifo Parking. Leashed dogs can ride both, and the flat lakeside paths make walking in pleasant.
Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September) are ideal: warm enough for lake swims, mild for walking, and quieter than the July and August peak when the old town and beaches are packed. Midsummer is beautiful but hot and crowded, so book accommodation early and plan beach time for the morning. Winter is calm and atmospheric, with many lakeside venues open year-round.
