Dog-Friendly Beaches in San Francisco

The most iconic dog beach in San Francisco: a sandy bayside strip on federal Golden Gate National Recreation Area land between the Marina and the Golden Gate Bridge, looking directly at the bridge while dogs swim in calm Bay water. Off-leash under voice control year-round. The water is cold (12-15 °C) but flat: no surf, no rip currents. Free parking lot, water fountains, pick-up bag stations.

An open-Pacific off-leash dog beach at the south-west corner of San Francisco, reached by a sand ramp down from the 60-metre bluffs. Two kilometres of wild Pacific sand backed by hang-gliders launching from the cliffs overhead, and a famously sociable off-leash pack that runs along the wet sand for half a kilometre at a time. Voice-controlled off-leash year-round.

A 5-kilometre Pacific surf beach along the western edge of San Francisco, with the north end (between the Cliff House and Stairwell 21) the off-leash voice-control section under federal GGNRA rules. Open Pacific surf, cold water year-round (10-12 °C), often foggy in summer afternoons. South of Stairwell 21, dogs must be leashed. Free metered parking along the Great Highway; the Great Highway is car-free south of Lincoln Way on weekends and a wide cyclepath / dog walkway at all times.
