Dog-Friendly Attractions in San Francisco

Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge with a dog is one of the iconic SF experiences. The 2.7 km east-side sidewalk (San Francisco-facing) is open to pedestrians and leashed dogs during daylight hours (5:00-18:30 in winter, 5:00-21:00 summer); the west-side sidewalk is bike-only. Round-trip 5.4 km, flat, with two panoramic viewpoints at the towers. Free parking is tight at the Welcome Center; Muni bus 28 or rideshare drop-off at the Toll Plaza is easier.

A federal GGNRA cliff-top trail at the north-west corner of San Francisco, with the panoramic Lands End Lookout, a 5 km out-and-back coastal path through cypress trees with the Golden Gate Bridge framed across the strait, the partially preserved Sutro Baths ruins (1894-1966) at the trailhead, and the Cliff House at Ocean Beach. Leashed dogs welcome on the entire trail and around the Sutro Baths ruins. The trail is unpaved, rocky in spots; sturdy paws only.

Take the Golden Gate Ferry from the Ferry Building or Pier 41 to Sausalito for one of the easiest SF dog day-trips: a 30-minute crossing with the dog on the outer deck, dramatic skyline-then-Bridge-then-Sausalito views, then a walkable village with leashed-dog-welcoming waterfront patios (Bar Bocce, Salito's, Le Garage) and a 4 km flat promenade north toward the Bay Model. Trip back is the same ferry. Dogs ride free on the outer deck, no carrier required.
