Riva del Garda is an outdoor, active town where lake and mountains meet, and dogs fit naturally into the windsurfing, hiking and cycling lifestyle. The one thing to plan around is the summer beach ban; everything else, from the promenade to the Ponale path, is very dog-workable. Here are the local rules and habits worth knowing before you go.
In town dogs must be on a leash and owners must pick up waste; carry a muzzle to put on if requested, as required on Lake Garda dog beaches and on public transport. The key local rule is that from 20 June to 10 September dogs are not allowed on the town beaches, only on the paved lakeside promenade and in the designated dog areas.
Summers at the lake are hot and the open lakefront and Ponale path offer little shade. Walk early morning or evening, carry water, and use the olive-shaded Monte Brione slopes for midday walks. The lake water itself is a good way for dogs to cool off where swimming is allowed outside the beach-ban zones.
Late spring (May to mid-June) and September to October are ideal: warm, lively but not packed, and the beaches are still open to dogs. July and August are the busiest and hottest, and the beach ban applies. Winter is quiet and mild by alpine standards, good for hiking the Ponale and Monte Brione with a dog.
Walk the Ponale path from Riva towards Val di Ledro for spectacular lake views, with the dog on a short leash, then come back for an early dinner on a Viale Rovereto terrace. Combine it with the Bastione hill fortress (dogs ride the panoramic lift for free with a muzzle and leash) and the Cascata del Varone waterfall, where leashed dogs are also welcome.
