Getting Around Lyon with Your Pet

Lyon's public transport network TCL (Transports en Commun Lyonnais) covers the city comprehensively with metro, tram, and bus lines. The rules for pets are strictly enforced on the metro but more flexible on surface transport. The key distinction is size: small dogs and cats in closed carriers no heavier than 6kg travel free on all TCL lines. Larger dogs face more restrictions — they are not permitted on the metro at all, but are welcome on buses and trams with a lead and muzzle. This means that with a large dog, you may need to plan your journeys around bus and tram routes rather than the metro. Lyon is also a very walkable city, and for most of the central tourist areas — Vieux-Lyon, Presqu'île, Croix-Rousse, the Rhône and Saône banks — walking or cycling is genuinely preferable.
