Lucerne sits between Lake Lucerne and the wooded ridge of Sonnenberg, so green space is closer than in most Swiss cities. The city manages a handful of fenced or signed off-leash areas, and the surrounding forests of Allmend, Sonnenberg and Eichwäldli are pet-friendly with a leash from 1 April to 31 July (ground-nesting bird season).
A vast 30-hectare municipal commons south of the train station, mixing sports fields, the Swissporarena and a large dog-walking area along the wooded fringe. Locals walk their dogs here at dawn before the football crowds arrive.

Wooded ridge rising directly above the city to 745 m, criss-crossed by 15 km of forestry tracks and panoramic ridge paths. The Sonnenbergbahn funicular from Kriens hauls people and leashed dogs to the top in five minutes for a long downhill walk back into Lucerne.
