Lagos sits at the meeting point of the limestone cliff coves of the western Algarve and the long open Meia Praia dune. The official Portuguese bathing season runs June-September, with municipal restrictions on dogs in those months at all beaches with lifeguards. Off-season (October-May), Meia Praia's 4 km of empty sand becomes one of the best dog beaches on the south coast.
A 4 km arc of open dune-backed sand stretching east from the Bensafrim river to Alvor. Off-season (October-May), dogs run leashed on the whole beach and most surf-school terraces stay open with dog-water bowls; in summer, official ban applies between the lifeguard flags from June 15 to September 15.

A 1.5 km wide sandy cove backed by ochre cliffs and accessed by a steep ramp, with a year-round dog zone marked at the eastern end below the Cabeço Camarinho headland. The fenced dog area allows off-leash access and remains open throughout the official bathing season.

The iconic Camilo cove with its 200-step wooden staircase down between dramatic limestone arches. The beach itself is closed to dogs during bathing season; the cliff-top boardwalk above stays dog-friendly year-round and gives the same postcard view without the climb.
