Dog-Friendly Parks in Helsinki

Helsinki's Central Park is not a manicured city garden but a real forest, 10 kilometres of continuous birch, pine, and spruce running from Töölö Bay north to the city limits. Dogs can run off-leash in the forest areas away from the designated paths, making this one of the best urban dog-walking destinations in northern Europe. In winter the park becomes a cross-country skiing destination, but even then well-behaved dogs are welcome. The diversity of terrain, wetlands, rocky outcrops, open meadows, and deep forest, means every walk here is genuinely different.

Helsinki's oldest and most elegant park, stretching along the rocky southern shoreline of the Kaivopuisto peninsula. The park has a dedicated off-leash dog area which is well-maintained and popular with local dog owners. Beyond the off-leash area, dogs are welcome throughout on a leash. The coastline views toward the archipelago are spectacular, and in summer the park fills with a relaxed Helsinki mix of families, picnickers, and dog walkers. The Embassy district surrounds the park, giving the whole area a calm, residential feel.

Seurasaari is a wooded island connected to the mainland by a wooden footbridge, home to Finland's national open-air museum of historic wooden buildings relocated from around the country. The outdoor areas of the island are free to access and dogs are welcome throughout on a leash. Walking the island's forest paths among centuries-old farmhouses and manor buildings with a dog in tow is one of Helsinki's most distinctive experiences. The island also has dog-friendly beach sections along its shore.

Esplanadi is Helsinki's great urban park boulevard, two parallel tree-lined promenades in the heart of the city, running between the Market Square and the Swedish Theatre. It is a living room for Helsinki: office workers eating lunch, tourists wandering, and local dog owners on their daily walk. Dogs are welcome on a leash throughout.
