Dog-Friendly Parks in Helsinki

Helsinki's Central Park is not a manicured city garden but a real forest — 10 kilometres of continuous birch, pine, and spruce running from Töölö Bay north to the city limits. Dogs can run off-leash in the forest areas away from the designated paths, making this one of the best urban dog-walking destinations in northern Europe. In winter the park becomes a cross-country skiing destination, but even then well-behaved dogs are welcome. The diversity of terrain — wetlands, rocky outcrops, open meadows, and deep forest — means every walk here is genuinely different.

Helsinki's oldest and most elegant park, stretching along the rocky southern shoreline of the Kaivopuisto peninsula. Seurasaari is a wooded island connected to the mainland by a wooden footbridge, home to Finland's national open-air museum of historic wooden buildings relocated from around the country. The outdoor areas of the island are free to access and dogs are welcome throughout on a leash. Walking the island's forest paths among centuries-old farmhouses and manor buildings with a dog in tow is one of Helsinki's most distinctive experiences. The island also has dog-friendly beach sections along its shore.

Esplanadi is Helsinki's great urban park boulevard — two parallel tree-lined promenades in the heart of the city, running between the Market Square and the Swedish Theatre. It is a living room for Helsinki: office workers eating lunch, tourists wandering, and local dog owners on their daily walk. Dogs are welcome on a leash throughout.
