Dog-Friendly Attractions in Helsinki

A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most extraordinary urban experiences in northern Europe. Suomenlinna is an 18th-century sea fortress spread across six interconnected islands, a 15-minute ferry ride from Market Square. The entire outdoor area of the island complex is open to dogs on a leash — the ramparts, the tunnels, the shoreline paths, the historic garrison buildings, and the coastal meadows. It is one of those rare places where you can spend a full day exploring with a dog and still feel you've only seen half of it. The ferry is an HSL public transport service.

Helsinki's great neoclassical centrepiece — the broad cobblestone square dominated by the white Helsinki Cathedral, flanked by the Government Palace and the main building of the University of Helsinki. It is one of the finest examples of neoclassical urban design in Europe. Dogs on a leash are entirely welcome on the square and in the surrounding streets. The Christmas market fills the square in December and is dog-friendly. Senate Square is the natural starting point for any Helsinki sightseeing itinerary.

Helsinki's historic waterfront market square at the edge of the South Harbour. Every morning from spring to autumn, the square fills with market stalls selling fresh fish, local produce, and Finnish specialities. Dogs are completely welcome outdoors at the market. The combination of the harbour view, the colourful market stalls, the Presidential Palace on one side and the ferry terminal for Suomenlinna on the other makes this the most atmospheric open space in Helsinki. A bag of fresh salmon to grill later for your dog is practically obligatory.
