Castelo de Guimarães
Castle hill
The 10th-century granite castle on the hill above the city, traditional birthplace of Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal. The outer ramparts, keep approach and surrounding lawns are dog-friendly year-round; only the keep interior, where the small museum lives, is closed to non-assistance dogs.
💡 Walk the rampart circuit at golden hour just before sunset; the granite glows orange and the city below lights up for one of the best views in northern Portugal.
