Göreme is the heart of Cappadocia, deep in central Anatolia (Nevşehir province, Turkey), a cave village set amid a valley of fairy chimneys, those tall cones of volcanic tuff carved by erosion. Inhabited since antiquity, the area was a major centre of Byzantine Christianity: the Göreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, gathers dozens of rock-cut churches painted with frescoes. All around unfold the hiking valleys, Love Valley, Rose Valley, Red Valley, Pigeon Valley, where you can walk for hours through lunar landscapes. At dawn hundreds of hot-air balloons rise over the ridges, the region's signature sight. Today the village lives on tourism, with its cave hotels carved into the rock. It is a setting unlike anywhere else on earth, but a harsh continental climate and rough volcanic ground make it demanding terrain for a dog.
The Göreme Open-Air Museum, a cluster of Byzantine rock-cut churches and monasteries with remarkable frescoes, listed by UNESCO. Dogs are not allowed inside the cave churches, but the valleys and trails surrounding the site can be walked on a leash.
Love Valley, famous for its tall, slender fairy chimneys, offers one of the finest hikes in the region. The dirt trail can be walked on a leash in the cool of the morning, but there is almost no shade or water, so bring plenty to keep the dog hydrated.
The neighbouring Rose Valley and Red Valley reveal tuff cliffs tinged with ochre and pink, magnificent at sunset. The long trails dotted with old rock-cut churches are perfect for leashed walking, provided you avoid the scorching afternoon hours.
Pigeon Valley, named for the thousands of dovecotes carved into the rock, links Göreme to the village of Uçhisar along a trail shaded in places. The path can be walked on a leash and offers fine views of the Uçhisar rock castle.
Uçhisar Castle, a huge tuff outcrop honeycombed with galleries that towers over all of Cappadocia, offers the widest panorama in the region. Leashed dogs can wander the village lanes at the foot of the rock, though the climb up the inner stairways is not advised for them.
Paşabağ (Monks Valley) and Devrent (Imagination Valley) line up the most spectacular fairy chimneys, some with triple caps. These open-air sites can be visited on a leash along short, flat paths, ideal for an early-morning stroll.
