Dog-Friendly Beaches near Florence

Viareggio is the main city of the Versilia Riviera and has at least one well-established designated dog beach (spiaggia per cani) on the northern end of its beach. The dog beach is properly signposted, fenced-access, and allows dogs to swim freely. The seafront promenade (passeggiata) is also pleasant for dog walks year-round.

The beaches near Carrara (Marble Mountains backdrop) have designated dog beach sections at Marina di Carrara and Marina di Massa. Less crowded than Viareggio, these beaches offer more space and a more relaxed atmosphere. The dramatic backdrop of the Apuan Alps adds to the scenery.

For non-sea beach alternatives, the artificial lake of Bilancino north of Florence has sandy lake beaches where dogs can access the water freely outside the supervised swimming areas. A popular local destination for families with dogs, especially in spring and autumn. No direct public transport — car or taxi needed.
