Most visitors fly into Charleston International Airport (CHS), about 20 minutes from downtown, or arrive by car along the coast. The compact Historic District is a joy to explore on foot with a dog, so you can leave the car parked for a day or two, but you will want a car or rideshare to reach the island beaches at Folly, Sullivan's Island and the Isle of Palms. Public buses carry service animals only, so plan on walking downtown and driving out to the sand.
