Cardiff is a compact, walkable city with excellent off-leash parks within 10 minutes of the centre. Bute Park, Cardiff Bay and Roath Park form a triangle of dog-friendly green space that covers most visitor needs.
May to June and September are ideal: 16-19 C highs, Bute Park is lush, and the city is less crowded than July-August. Avoid the Autumn internationals (October-November rugby weekends at the Principality Stadium) and the Cardiff International Food and Drink Festival (July) when the city centre fills and parking disappears. January to March is quiet, the Bay is excellent, and hotel prices drop significantly.

The best Cardiff dog circuit runs from Bute Park (43 acres of off-leash parkland beside the castle, River Taff walking path) south to Cardiff Bay (bay circuit, barrage, 8 km flat waterfront loop). Roath Park (30 acres, lake, dogs off-leash on grass, 2 km east of centre) is the neighbourhood park alternative. For a longer day, Cefn Onn Country Park (6 km north, 70 acres of woodland, fully off-leash) is accessible by Arriva buses from the city centre.
