Dog-Friendly Beaches near Cardiff

The closest beach to Cardiff, reachable in 12 minutes by Valley Lines train. The stretch south of the Pier toward the Yacht Club is under seasonal restriction from May to September, but the stretch north of the Pier toward the Cardiff Bay barrage is dog-friendly every day of the year. Pebble shingle, a long flat promenade, and the Penarth Pier itself with a dog-welcoming café at the entrance.

The little sister cove of Barry Island, on the eastern side of the headland away from the main Whitmore Bay arcade. Dogs are welcome year-round here while the main bay is closed to them in summer. Sand and shingle, a steep path down from the cliff car park, and rock pools at low tide. Reach by Vale Line train to Barry Island (30 minutes from Cardiff Central) and a 10-minute walk over the headland.

An uninhabited tidal island 450 metres long, reached by a stone causeway from Swanbridge that is exposed for around four hours either side of low tide. A favourite local dog walk that ends at a Victorian shipwreck on the eastern shore. The RNLI installed a traffic-light tide-warning system at the foot of the causeway, the only safe-tide indicator of its kind in Wales. Park at the Captain's Wife Inn (also dog-friendly) and walk down to the causeway.
