Dog-Friendly Attractions in Bled

Bled Castle perches dramatically on a 130 m limestone cliff above the northeastern shore of the lake, one of Slovenia's oldest castles (first documented 1011). The outdoor courtyards, terraces, ramparts, and the chapel courtyard are all open to leashed dogs, and the panoramic terrace offers what is widely regarded as the finest view of Lake Bled, the island, and the church. Dogs are not permitted inside the indoor castle museum or the chapel. The 15 to 20 minute climb up from the lake on a wooded path is itself a fine dog walk.

Bled Island is the only natural island in Slovenia, a small teardrop of land in the middle of the lake crowned by the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, first consecrated in 1465. The island is reached by traditional pletna handmade wooden rowboats operated by 24 licensed families with hereditary rights granted in 1740 (about 20 minutes each way). Dogs are accepted on the pletna at the operator's discretion, usually granted outside peak summer. Once on the island, leashed dogs can walk the perimeter path and climb the 99 steps to the church courtyard. Dogs are not admitted inside the church.

A 1.6 km wooden walkway built in 1893 along the Radovna river through a 250 m vertical limestone gorge, ending at the Šum waterfall. The walkway is one of Slovenia's classic short hikes, dramatic but very accessible. Leashed dogs are admitted with the standard entrance fee. The walk is one way, with either a return shuttle bus or a 3 km forest loop back to the entrance. The walkway is narrow with handrails, only suitable for calm, well-behaved dogs that are comfortable on uneven wood underfoot. Closed in winter (typically reopens late April).
