Dog-Friendly River & Lake Spots near Bern

Wide unsupervised grass meadows along the Aare upstream of the city, just south of Wabern. Dogs are welcome on lead year-round on the meadows and at the riverbank; off the official Marzili swim corridor, the calmer side channels and back-eddies are safe places for dogs to splash and drink in summer. Reached by tram 9 to Wabern then a 10-minute walk.

A 12 km artificial lake on the Aare west of Bern, with a flat shoreline path popular with dog walkers. Dogs are allowed off-leash on the south shore meadow sections and may swim at most informal entry points (no formal beach). Calm water — much safer than the Aare — and a 5 km circular trail for longer walks. Reached by Postauto bus from Bern in 25 minutes.

Lake Thun, 30 minutes south of Bern by S-Bahn, is the closest natural lake with informal dog-friendly shoreline. The unsupervised public meadow at Hilterfingen accepts dogs year-round (off-leash where signed) with shallow lake entry. Outside the official supervised beach areas, much of the Thunersee shore is dog-tolerant in the off-season (October to April).
