As principais praias balneares como a Praia da Rocha e a Praia dos Três Castelos são praias concessionadas com Bandeira Azul onde os cães são proibidos durante a época balnear, sensivelmente de junho a setembro. Os cães são tolerados todo o ano em enseadas e troços não concessionados mais sossegados, como a Praia João de Arens e partes da Praia do Alvor, desde que não haja sinalização a proibi-los.
A secluded, non-concessioned cove west of Praia da Rocha, reached by a steep path or by sea, with cliffs and clear water and far fewer crowds. As a non-concessioned beach it is generally open to dogs year-round, including in summer, where the busy main beaches are not.
Rules: Keep dogs leashed and under control; clean up after them, and check for any local signage before letting a dog off-lead.
Alvor's long sandy beach sits within the Portimão area at the mouth of the estuary; the concessioned, supervised central stretch bans dogs in summer, but the non-concessioned section a short walk away tolerates them. Combine a beach visit with the adjoining Ria de Alvor boardwalk for a longer leashed walk.
Rules: Dogs allowed on the non-concessioned part, on a leash; banned on the central Blue Flag stretch during the June to September bathing season.
Portimão's iconic kilometre-long Blue Flag beach beneath dramatic red cliffs, backed by the boardwalk, bars and the marina. As a concessioned bathing beach, dogs are not permitted during the summer season, but the boardwalk above it is open to leashed dogs all year for a clifftop walk.
Rules: No dogs on the sand during the June to September bathing season. Leashed dogs welcome on the boardwalk year-round.
