Armona's ocean side is a vast dune-backed Atlantic beach that stretches, unbuilt, all the way towards Fuseta. From October to May it is the classic Olhão dog walk: leashed dogs, kilometres of firm sand and almost nobody around. From 1 June to 30 September dogs are banned from the supervised bathing area (Armona-Mar is an official lifeguarded bathing beach), so summer visits mean walking well beyond the concession and obeying the signs.

Culatra is a living fishing island with three landings (Culatra village, Hangares and Farol under its 1851 lighthouse), linked by boardwalks over the dunes to an immense south-facing ocean beach. Outside the bathing season a leashed dog can roam the whole strand; in summer the rule is the same as everywhere in Portugal, no dogs on the supervised stretches, so head far along the sand away from the villages and watch for signage. The lagoon-side flats are prime feeding grounds for wading birds, keep the leash short there.

The fishing village of Fuseta, still inside the Olhão concelho, pairs a calm lagoon beach by the village with an ocean beach on the facing barrier island, reached by a short seasonal boat. Both Fuseta-Mar and Fuseta-Ria are official bathing beaches, so dogs are excluded from the supervised areas from 1 June to 30 September; off-season the sheltered ria side is one of the gentlest places in the Algarve for a dog's first swim.
