Dog-Friendly Lago Maggiore Beaches

The Tenero-Contra camping district at the Ticino delta hosts the largest free-access lakefront strip in the region, with long pebble and sand beaches stretching east toward the Bolle di Magadino reserve. Leashed dogs welcome year-round on the unmanaged sections; designated dog zones in the eastern stretch near the Mappo wakeboard cable allow off-leash swimming per the ordinanza cantonale. Shallow shoreline, gentle slope and warm summer water make this the lake's best beginner-dog swim spot.

Ascona's lakefront promenade runs along the chic sister village, with several small pebble coves east and west of the village centre where leashed dogs can dip paws or swim in calm shallow water with the pastel facades reflected on the lake. Off-leash allowed in informal sections outside the village beach itself. Best reached by NLM lake boat (15 min, dogs free) or via the lakeside walk from Locarno.

Vira Gambarogno on the southern shore of Lago Maggiore opposite Locarno is a quiet Ticinese village with an unfenced public lakeshore where leashed dogs can swim freely in calm shallow water away from Locarno's busier beaches. Granite benches, mature plane trees and a Romanesque church above the harbour. Reached by NLM boat from Locarno (20 min, dogs free) or by car via the lakeside SS394 from Magadino.
