Heverleebos and Meerdaalwoud Forests
South ยท Heverleebos, 3001 Heverlee
The vast Heverleebos and adjoining Meerdaalwoud form one of Flanders' largest contiguous mixed-forest blocks, 4800 hectares of beech and oak starting 3 km south of central Leuven. Natuurpunt manages multiple marked walking and cycling routes with dog-friendly loops; the Arenberg gate near the KU Leuven campus is the easiest in-city entry. Multi-day pet-friendly hiking is possible on the GR-512 long-distance trail crossing both forests.
๐ก Start at the Arenberg gate next to Park Abbey for the most direct from-city entry; the colour-coded loops (red 4 km, yellow 8 km, blue 12 km) are well signposted and shaded year-round.
