Conil is a relaxed, dog-friendly Andalusian beach town, but two things shape a trip with a dog here: the strict summer beach ban and the Costa de la Luz heat. Plan your beach time and your walks around both and you will have an easy, happy stay. Here is the practical detail to know before you go.
Conil bans dogs from all its beaches during the bathing season, from June 1 to September 30, and fines apply. If you visit in summer, plan beach time for yourself and walk your dog on the Roche pine and cliff trails or the Rรญo Salado instead. From October to May dogs are welcome on the sand on a leash with waste bags.
Costa de la Luz summers are hot, with daily highs around 27 to 28 C in July and August. Walk at dawn or dusk, never in the midday sun, and test sand and asphalt with the back of your hand before letting paws touch it. Carry water everywhere, shade and public fountains are scarce on the coastal trails.
Spanish rules require dogs to be leashed on streets, trails and public spaces, and waste must be picked up, with fines for offenders. Keep vaccinations current and carry your dog's documents. Certain breeds classed as potentially dangerous (PPP) require a muzzle and a special licence in public, worth knowing if you own one.
Since Conil has no dog beach, in summer the nearest designated dog beach is El Aculadero in El Puerto de Santa Marรญa (about 50 km), open to dogs June 1 to September 30. In winter, the Lavaculos / Sancti Petri zone in Chiclana (about 19 to 24 km) is open to dogs from October 15 to March 15. Both are worth the drive for an off-leash sea swim.
