The Alte Donau is an oxbow lake separated from the main Danube — calmer, warmer, and excellent for swimming. Several sections of the Alte Donau shoreline have designated dog zones where dogs can swim freely. The Floridsdorf and Langenzersdorf sides tend to have better dog access than the more developed resort beach areas.

The Lobau is a protected floodplain forest and nature reserve east of Vienna, part of the Donau-Auen National Park. It has natural swimming ponds (Lobaugewässer) where dogs are permitted. The atmosphere is entirely different from the manicured city parks — wild, reed-lined, and peaceful. Dogs must be on-leash in protected zones but have more freedom in the recreation areas.

The Neusiedler See is a vast, shallow steppe lake on the border between Austria and Hungary, unique in Central Europe. It is surrounded by reed beds, wine villages, and wide open sky. Dogs are permitted at several lake access points around the lake, with the areas around Podersdorf and Rust being particularly accessible. A full day trip from Vienna that no dog-loving visitor should miss.
