Leashed dogs welcome year-round on the river bank and in the cooler river pools (the hot sulphur pools themselves are restricted to humans for hygiene).

A series of natural river pools along the Merse where the river slows through limestone bedrock in the wooded Basso Merse nature reserve, with shaded gravel beaches between Brenna and the medieval Ponte della Pia (the 13th-century stone bridge linked to Dante's Inferno V Pia de' Tolomei). Free public access, no facilities; reached by 100-300 m paths from SP73 lay-bys. Leashed dogs welcome year-round on all the river-bank beaches and in the pools.

A 4 km grey-pebble and sand bay on the Tyrrhenian Etruscan Coast in front of the Bolgheri DOC wine area (home of Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Tignanello), with the famous Viale dei Cipressi cypress avenue 8 km inland and the Costa degli Etruschi protected coastline.
