Once swim season ends on October 1, Rockaway becomes one of NYC's best dog walks: 11 km of Atlantic surf, wide flat sand, and a boardwalk that runs alongside it. Outside swim season (Oct 1–Apr 30), dogs are allowed on the beach and boardwalk leashed. The boardwalk concessions reopen in late spring with several dog-water bowls along the route.

A federally-managed 7-mile barrier beach on the New Jersey side of the Lower New York Bay, with the most generous dog policy near NYC. Dogs are permitted on most of Sandy Hook year-round, including the dunes and back beach areas, on a 6-foot leash. Beaches B and E are dog-permitted swim sections in the off-season. The northern tip has Manhattan skyline views.

Technically not a beach but a small swim inlet on Prospect Park's Lullwater Pond, where dogs can wade and swim during the park's official off-leash hours (5 am–9 am, April–November). It's the only urban dog-swim spot in NYC. Expect 10–40 dogs on a sunny weekend morning.
